The McCook Family

The McCook family was prominent in Pittsburgh and their generosity in the community was widespread. In a boom time with few laws and fewer taxes, Willis McCook excelled at “the deal,” specializing in mergers and acquisitions and helping to create the role of “corporate attorney.”

Mary McCook, who had a very strong faith, mothered their ten children while Willis remained active in the community. Both Willis and his wife Mary passed away in the early 1920’s. Unfortunate times beset the family during the Great Depression and they lost the McCook Mansion in 1939.

The City of Pittsburgh assumed ownership of the property and during WWII, made it available to the University of Pittsburgh to house military officers in training. Bessie Reed (nee McCook) continued to live in her home until her death
in 1966.
